Solon came up one win short of a state dual title.

Second-ranked Solon fell to top-ranked New Hampton 45-23 in the finals of the Class 2A state dual meet on Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In its second ever trip to the state dual meet, Solon cruised to the title match with wins over No. 7 Sergeant-Bluff Luton and Washington.

The Spartans won just five matches against No. 1 New Hampton in the title match while the Chickasaws recorded bonus points in eight of their win victories.

Second-ranked Drew West opened the dual with a pin at 126 pounds but New Hampton won the four matches to take a 21-6 lead.

Fourth-ranked Trevor Nelson snapped the New Hampton win streak with a 7-3 win over No. 2 Ryan Gorman in the marquee match of the night at 160 pounds.

A 10-3 win by Dillon Diltz at 170 points cut the New Hampton lead to 21-12 but the Chickasaws won three next three matches, two by fall, to secure the dual.

Tyler Linderbaum (285) and Bryce West (120) each added pins for Solon.

In its first trip to the state dual meet since 2001 Solon was dominant in two wins to reach the final.

The Spartans won 23 of 28 matches while defeating Sergeant-Bluff Luton and Washington by a combined score of 123-24.
