Oliver Martin may have put the finishing touches on a brilliant swimming career on Saturday.
Or he may have more swimming to do.
The West High senior and Michigan football recruit said on national signing day the door was opening for him to pursue swimming in college.
“I could see myself potentially doing that,” Martin said when asked on signing day about swimming in college. “The problem is there is just a little overlap so I would come in if I wanted to and swing the sprint events at the end of the season.”
If his career in the pool is over, Martin closed it in fitting fashion on Saturday.
Martin won the 50 freestyle title in a time of 20.72 to earn his eighth career gold medal at the state swimming meet at the Marshalltown YMCA.
The time of 20.72 was eighth best all-time at the state meet and gave Martin his first individual state title.
Martin added a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 46.36 and helped the West High 200 medley relay team to a seventh-place finish as the Trojans place ninth in the team standings with 94 points.
Waukee won its second straight team title, racking up 259 points to finish 68 clear of runner-up Johnston.
Martin joined Izaak Hajek, Sam Deyak and Brennon Keen on the 200 medley relay team that placed seventh in 1:37.27 and teamed with Keen, Ben Berhow and Noah Bruns to place 10th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:28.23.
West High also received 11th place finishes from Lane Griffis in the 500 freestyle and Ben Berhow in the 100 breaststroke on its way to 94 teams points.
City High freshman Forrest Frazier placed third in the 100 backstroke, breaking his own school record with a time of 52.01, to lead the Little Hawks to a 16th place team finish with 45 points.
Frazier added a ninth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and joined Louis Stephan, Eric Thomas and Mickale Sadecky to place 10th in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:38.42.
