IOWA CITY – The Regina girls basketball team is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in Class 2A for lots of reasons, including the do-everything role provided by senior Sarah Lehman.
She scored 19 points and had a career-high five assists as Regina broke open a close game in the second half and then cruised to a 76-42 victory over Tipton on Senior Night at the Regina gym.
“She just does everything for us,” said Regina coach Jeff Wallace. “She runs the floor so well. We tell her to focus more on rebounding and she does that. She even stroked the three tonight.
“One of the aspects of her game that doesn't get a lot of credit is she really is passing the ball well.”
Lehman often gets overshadowed by her more celebrated teammate, all-star junior guard Mary Crompton, and sometimes even by sophomore center Alex Wiese.
But Wallace knows just how value Lehman is to the team.
“Mary and Alex get a lot of publicity as they should,” Wallace said. “But Sarah is our motor. And when she goes, we go. We're a really good team when she goes.”
Crompton complemented Lehman on offense with 16 points, while Wiese held down the paint on defense against her former team with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Wiese played for Tipton as a freshman before transferring to Regina, where she now is part of a team that set a school single-season record on Tuesday by winning its 22nd game in its second consecutive unbeaten regular season.
“They've accomplished a lot of great things this year,” Wallace said of his team. “It's the most wins ever in the regular season for a team.”
