City High, West High With Strong Showings at District Swim Meet

City High and West High took turns posting standout performances at the district swimming meet.
It was one newcomer and one veteran that stood out most on Saturday.
City High freshman Forrest Frazier and West High senior Oliver Martin each won an individual title and added a runner-up finish while qualifying for state in multiple events at the district swim meet at Southeast Polk.
West High had 11 state meet event qualifiers while finishing third in the team standings with 343 points.
City High had six event qualifiers and finished fifth with 217.5 points.
Waukee won seven events and rolled to the team title with 455.5 points to finish 98 points in front of runner-up Ankeny.
Frazier set City High school records in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke on Saturday in his first ever district meet.
The freshman also helped the City High 200 medley relay team to a fourth place finish in a state qualifying time.
Frazier won the 100 backstroke in a school-record time of 52.45 and was second in the 100 breaststroke in 59.46.
He joined freshman Louis Stephan and juniors Eric Thomas and Mickale Sadecky on the Little Hawks 200 medley relay team that finished fourth in 1:38.81 while qualifying for state.
Thomas and Stephan both qualified for the state meet in individual events with top-five finishes on Saturday.
Thomas finished third in the backstroke in 55.89 to qualify for state and also reached the state meet in the 200 IM, finishing seventh in a time of 2:02.17.
Stephan qualified for state with a fifth-place finish in the breaststroke in 1:00.39.
Martin paced a strong West High performance with a dominating first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.66.
The time by Martin was more than a second faster than second place finisher Max Martin of Ankeny and was the top time in the state this season.
Martin added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle in 46.27, the fourth fastest time in the state this year.
The senior was also part of a pair of state qualifying West High relay teams.
Martin teamed with Noah Bruns, Ben Berhow and Ethan McAreavy to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay a time of 1:27.89.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Martin, Bruns, Brennon Keen and freshman Izaak Hajek was second in 3:14.67.
West High also qualified its 200 medley relay team as the foursome of Hajek, Keen, Berhow and Sam Deyak placed third in 1:38.67
Hajek joined Martin as an individual two-event qualifier for West High securing state meet spots in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
The freshman placed sixth in the 200 IM on Saturday in 2:02.13 and was fourth in the 100 fly in 52.99.
Lane Griffis placed third in the 500 freestyle in 4:53.71 to qualify for state while Brennon Keen earned a state meet spot in the 50 freestyle with a fourth-place finish in the 22.42.
Berhow and Deyak eached qualified in the 100 breaststroke with top-seven finishes.
Berhow placed third in 59.76 while Deyak was seventh in 1:01.32.
The state swimming meet will be held Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA beginning at Noon.
