Two years ago, City High finished 10th at the 14-team MVC Super Meet.

On Saturday, the Little Hawks showed just how far they have come since.

City High had four finalists and 12 wrestlers earn top-eight finishes on its way to a runner-up finish at the MVC Super Meet on Saturday at Waterloo West High School.

Cedar Rapids Prairie won its fifth consecutive team title, rolling up 224.5 points to finish 36.5 in front of runner-up City High.

Prairie was the only team with multiple individual champs as 13 of the 14 teams in the meet had a first-place finisher.

The City High title came from junior 195-pound junior Jacob Dykes and the Little Hawks got runner-up finishes from Lance Bormann at 126, Joey Harney at 132 and Jordain Buckland at 220 pounds to finish with 188 points.

West High junior Nelson Brands (46-1) was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler for the third straight season, becoming the 16th three-time MVC champion with a title at 152 pounds.

Carter Rohweder added a runner-up finish for West High at 160 pounds as the Trojans finished fourth in the team standings with 146 points.

Dykes led the way for City High with his title at 195 pounds, improving to 39-0 on the season.

The fourth-ranked Dykes reached the finals with a first-period pin and a major decision and won an 11-1 major decision over No. 8 Brayden Schultz of Linn-Mar in the 195-pound championship.

Bormann, Harney and Buckland all lost to ranked wrestlers in the championship round.

Bormann fell to Cedar Rapids Washington’s fourth ranked Will Foreman 26-11 in the 126-pound title match and Prairie’s sixth-ranked Trenton Wennermark pinned Harney for the 132-pound championship.  

Fifth-ranked Buckland (23-2) pinned No. 9 Payne Johnson of Waterloo East in the semifinals at 220 but dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 7 Sam Gerst of Waterloo West in the championship.

Brock Hunger placed third for City High at 182 pounds and Alex Kooker added a third-place finish at 145 for City High as half of the Little Hawks’ 12 top eight finishes placed in the top three.

Brands continued his mastery MVC Super Meet mastery with a trio of impressive wins.

The top-ranked Brands earned a second-period pin in the quarterfinals and scored 53 total points in back-to-back tech. falls in the semifinals and finals.

Brands won a 27-11 tech. fall over fifth-ranked Alex Ward of Dubuque Hempstead in the championship.

Rohweder (38-7) dropped a 6-2 decision to third-ranked Matt Culver of Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the 160-pound championship.

Hans vonRabenau (18-5) placed third at 106 pounds and Alex Stumpf and Alex Aguirre both placed fourth for West High.

Stumpf (30-18) was fourth at 170 and Aguirre finished third at 120 pounds.
