Girls Basketball Roundup: West High Runs Win Streak to Eight

With a gauntlet of ranked teams waiting West High made sure it wasn’t caught looking ahead on Friday.
Class 5A third-ranked West High built a 34-22 halftime lead and cruised to a 62-39 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie in a non-conference matchup of Mississippi Valley Conference members in Cedar Rapids.
The win was the eighth straight for West High (13-1) which starts a string of three consecutive games against ranked teams by hosting sixth-ranked West Des Moines Valley on Saturday.
Cedar Rapids Prairie dropped to 4-10 with the loss.
Rachael Saunders led West High with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists while Katie McGrane added 13 points.
Lauren Zacharias had 10 points, six steals and three assists and Cailyn Morgan had eight points.
Emma Koch grabbed seven rebounds for West High.

City High Rallies to Stay Unbeaten
City High remained among dwindling list of unbeaten teams in Iowa on Friday but it didn’t come without a fight.
Class 5A second-ranked City High rallied from a 14-point, third-quarter deficit for a 55-50 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference matchup in Cedar Rapids.
Ashley Joens had a game-high 24 points to help City High improve to 14-0 on the season and 8-0 in MVC play.
Kennedy Dighton had 17 points for Cedar Rapids Jefferson which dropped to 5-8 on the season and 3-4 in MVC.
City High trailed 27-24 at the half and 44-36 after three quarters but scored 15 unanswered points to open the final quarter.
Kenya Earl had 15 points and Aubrey Joens added eight for City High.

Koenig, Miller Lead West Branch Past Bellevue
It was Haley Mullinnix that had a huge game on Tuesday as West Branch stopped a two-game losing skid.
On Friday it was the other two members of the West Branch backcourt that came up big to help the Bears win their second straight.
Tatum Koenig and Paige Miller combined for 46 points as West Branch won at Bellevue 57-39 in a River Valley Conference cross-divisional game.
Koenig had 26 points and nine rebounds for West Branch which improved to 10-6 on the season and 9-6 in RVC play while Bellevue dropped to 10-5 and 7-5 in conference games.
Miller had 20 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists and Mullinnix added six points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists in the win.
Regina Runs Regular Season Streak to State-Best 37 Straight
The state’s longest active regular season winning streak now belongs to Regina.
Class 2A top-ranked Regina ran its regular season winning streak to 37 on Friday with a 66-26 win over North Cedar and took over the top spot when 3A No. 1 Pocahontas Area fell to Nevada.
Regina improved to 14-0 on the season and 12-0 in River Valley Conference play with its 40-point win over the Knights on Friday in Clarence.
North Cedar dropped to 6-9 and 5-9 in RVC play.
Four players scored in double figures for Regina led by Sarah Lehman with a game-high 16 points.
Mary Crompton added 15 points, Greyson Dumont had 12 and Alex Wiese 11 for Regina.
The Regals forced 18 first-half turnovers and led 43-14 at the half.
Clippers Come up Short in Upset Bid
Clear Creek Amana came up a few minutes short of a big-time upset on Friday.
The Clippers led Class 3A fifth-ranked Center Point-Urbana 56-54 with under six minutes to play but couldn’t hold on, falling 69-58 in a WAMAC West Division contest in Center Point.
Clear Creek Amana dropped to 8-6 on the season while Center Point-Urbana improved to 13-2.
