IOWA CITY – A high school wrestling match is six minutes but Nelson Brands rarely needs that much time.
Only three times this season has a Brands match lasted until the final whistle.
Brands demonstrated on Saturday he’s more than capable of wrestling the whole six minutes.
In fact, if Brands had it his way matches could be eight, 10 or 15 minutes.
“I’m really looking forward to college because they have that three-minute period, it could be five (minutes), five, five and I would love it,” Brands said. “The more time the better, I don’t get tired.”
Brands only needed six minutes once in his five matches on Saturday at the 25th annual Tom Lepic Duals at West High but in that match he looked like he could have wrestled six more minutes.
Top-ranked Brands overcame an early takedown to win 12-7 decision over No. 4 Cayd Lara of Fort Dodge in marquee matchup of Class 3A 152 pounders.
Brands scored a trio of late takedowns including one as the final whistle blew to hand Lara his second loss of the season after defeating the Fort Dodge junior 9-7 at the Council Bluffs Classic on Dec. 9.
“He came out fast, I think people when they watch my films that see that I start slow, that’s how I’ve wrestled my whole life and I need to fix that soon,” Brands said. “He came out fast and got that first takedown and then he ended up breaking.”
Ranked by Intermat as the No. 20 152-pounder in the nation, Brands is 30-1 on the season with his only loss a 5-3 decision to Intermat’s fourth-ranked Austin O’Connor of St. Rita (Illinois).
Since the loss to O’Connor at the Al Dvorak Invitational on Dec. 23 Brands has won six straight matches all by tech fall or fall.
“You get better through wins and losses, I’m usually disappointed with loss but that match I felt like I wrestled pretty well I think I just need to get to my shots more on him,” Brands said of the loss to O’Connor. “He’s kind of an on the edge wrestler almost the opposite of me he doesn’t like to get in your face so I probably should have kept the pace more.”
The win over Lara highlighted a 5-0 performance for Brands on Saturday helping West High to a 4-1 mark at the dual tournament.
The Trojans defeated Pleasant Valley 54-19 in its opening match and added a 55-22 win over Council Bluffs Lewis Central.
Third-ranked Fort Dodge won the final five matches to earn a 43-30 win over West High.
West High then dropped a 51-30 dual to Blue Springs, Missouri before ending the meet with a 41-23 win over Albia.
Hans vonRabenau (106) and Carter Rohweder each went 5-0 for West High on Saturday.
Rohweder had four pinsn among his five victories on Saturday as he improved to 28-5 on the season while vonRabenau improved to 6-0.
“The season is short,” Rohweder said. “We are already into the back half and it seems like it started yesterday.”
