Dubuque Hempstead (1-0) at West High (1-0)
West High showed why it’s a favorite to return to the 4A title game with a 30-point win over Marian Catholic in its season opener last Friday.

Dubuque Hempstead gets a shot at showing it can hang with the state’s best in the Mississippi Valley Conference opener for both teams on Friday.

The Mustangs return four starters from last year’s squad that went 10-14 and lost to Dubuque Senior by three in the substate finals.

Hempstead brings back three of its top four scorers and its top two rebounders from a season ago and opened the season with a 68-56 win over Clinton.

West High roared to a 72-42 win over Marian Catholic in its opener behind 19 points from Connor McCaffery and 18 from Patrick McCaffery.

What to Watch
City High (0-2) will try to snap a two-game losing skid to Mississippi Athletic Conference foes to begin the season when it travels to Pleasant Valley on Tuesday.

The Little Hawks opened the season with back-to-back losses to Davenport North and Muscatine.

Davenport North, Muscatine and Pleasant Valley were picked fourth, fifth and sixth in the preseason MAC coaches poll.

The trip to Pleasant Valley begins a three-game road stretch for City High against teams that reached the state semifinals last season.

City High plays at Cedar Falls and West High next week to open MVC Play.

Keep An Eye On
Solon freshman AJ Coons didn’t waste any time making an impact at the varsity level.

Coons had nine points and six rebounds in his varsity debut and poured in a game-high 19 points in a 74-69 overtime loss to Center Point-Urbana on Friday.

Solon (1-1) begins WAMAC divisional play this week when traveling to Central DeWitt on Tuesday and hosting Western Dubuque in an East Division showdown Friday.
