IOWA CITY – City High had a plan for how it wanted to defend Joe Wieskamp.
Actually, the Little Hawks had several plans to slow the Muscatine all-stater on Thursday.
None of those plans proved to be very effective.
Wieskamp had a game-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds leading Muscatine (1-0) to a 70-46 win over City High in a non-conference matchup in Iowa City.
“We wanted to rotate a couple of different guys and do a couple of different things out of our man defense, throwing a guy at him or whatever it is but he is just a heck of a player,” City High coach Derek Robert said. “He’s one of the best players in the state you just try to do your best and do some different things because he’s going to beat you one-on-one most of the time.”
City High got 15 points and eight rebounds from freshman Keshawn Christian and 11 points from sophomore Ry Threlkeld-Wiegand but couldn’t keep up with Wieskamp and the Muskies.
The Iowa commit scored 22 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as Muscatine built a 39-22 halftime lead.
The loss dropped City High to 0-2 on the season and came after a 62-27 loss at Davenport North in Tuesday’s season opener.
“We are a young team and this was just our second game,” Threlkeld-Wiegand said. “We are getting better, this game was a lot better than the last one.” Threlkeld-Wiegand
Thursday was all about Wieskamp from the opening tip.
The 6-foot-6 Iowa commit scored seven points during a 12-0 Muscatine run that spanned nearly six minutes of the opening quarter and gave the Muskies an early 12-2 cushion.
Wieskamp had 12 of his 27 points in the opening quarter as built a 17-11 lead.
“He is guy that is so strong and good with the basketball that he gets to the rim easily,” Roberts said. “We really wanted to limit him getting into the paint and we didn’t do a very good job of it but we are young and we are learning.”
Muscatine opened the second quarter with seven straight points to push the lead to 24-11 and never let the Little Hawks get closer than 10 the rest of the way.
A 3-point by Threlkeld-Wiegand made it 24-14 and a basket by Christian with 4:29 left in the first half trimmed the lead to 26-16 but that is as close the City High would get.
Muscatine shot 48 percent from the field in the opening half and 45 percent for the game while City High shot 34 percent and was 6-of-24 from 3-point range.
“Defensively we just have to get better at foundational defensive things,” Robert said. “These guys are fun to coach and they are learning, we just have to continue to improve.”
Underclassmen accounted for all but eight points for the Little Hawks as sophomore Antonio Turner added nine for City High.
Threlkeld-Wiegand had three 3-pointers among his 11 points after going 0-for-4 from 3-point range in the loss at Davenport North.
“I felt good after that first one,” Threlkeld-Wiegand. “My first two were a little off but getting one down gave me a lot of confidence.”
Threlkeld-Wiegand and Christian combined for 26 points and scoring a combined six in Tuesday’s loss.
“This is the second varsity game for a lot of these guys and even some of our juniors and seniors don’t have a lot of varsity court time,” Roberts said. “This is just a youthful experience and we just have to focus on the simple things and keep getting better at those things every day.”
