FORT DODGE – New year, new challenges, new class and new field for Nate Green.
Same results for the Regina junior.
After placing ninth in Class 1A last year, Green notched a second consecutive top-10 finish at the state cross country meet on Saturday in his first year in Class 2A.
Green placed eighth in Class 2A on Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge finishing the 5K course in 16:47.4.
“I didn’t change anything from last year,” Green said. “I felt like coming into today, having been on the course before that I could do that again.”
Behind Green and fellow junior Nathan Meyer Regina finished third as a team in Class 1A a year ago.
The Regals missed out on a team berth after making the jump to 2A this season but Green and Meyer each turned in strong performances for the second straight season.
“We did the exact same thing as last year,” Green said. “It was a shame that we couldn’t make it as a team but I still represented Regina.”
Green entered the state meet unranked but left with a top-10 finish after shaving 21 seconds off his state meet time from last year.
“He did the same thing last year, the day of state he stepped up and the light went on,” Regina coach Chad Swope said. “I even asked him today I said ‘where did that come from?’ When he steps up on a day like today that is so cool to see and I’m proud of him.”
Meyer had his own strong showing placing 26th in a time of 17.21.4.
A year ago Meyer was 34th in the 1A race in a time of 17:43.3.

“I’m so proud of Nathan Meyer, he just works his tail off,” Swope said. “Last year he was in the 30s in 1A and ran a 17:43 so to run 17:20 something and finish right around the top 25, I’m proud of him.”
Regina freshman Kennedy Scott made her state meet debut on Saturday placing 37th in 20:40.2.
Scott has taken more than six minutes of her time since the start of the season when she failed to break 26 minutes at a meet.
“The day before the season started she wasn’t sure she was going to go out and here she is at the state meet finishing in the top 40,” Swope said. “She has that fire inside and when she gets in a competitive situation you know she is going to rise up like that.”
