Player to Watch: Davenport Central senior running back Koby Williams (5-7, 185) leads the Blue Devils with 427 rushing yards and five touchdowns and is averaging 5.8 yards per carry.
Key Stat: Davenport Central has had success when it can run the ball. The Blue Devils are averaging 300 yards rushing per game in three wins and 82.5 rushing yards in two losses.
About Davenport Central: The Blue Devils doubled their win total from a year ago with back-to-back wins to open the season. Following its 2-0 start Davenport Central was outscored 77-14 in losses to North Scott and Cedar Rapids Prairie but responded with its first shutout since 2014, a 31-0 win over Davenport North last week.
Davenport Central doesn’t throw it much, averaging just under 10 attempts per game, but when the Blue Devils do throw it is usually in the direction of junior receiver Nate Tyson (6-1, 150). Tyson has 11 of Davenport Central’s 25 receptions this season, has accounted for 70 percent of the Blue Devils passing yardage with 247 yards and has all three touchdown catches.
About City High: The Little Hawks went to the air in their district opener as Nate Wieland threw for 353 yards in a 49-28 win over Clinton. The 353 passing yards helped City High roll up a season-high 551 yards of total offense while averaging better than nine yards per play.
City High didn’t forget about the run game last week, rushing for 198 yards. Led by senior running back Bryce Frantz (527 yards, 9 touchdowns) and Wieland (436 yards, 7 touchdowns) City High is averaging 202 rushing yards per
Burlington (2-3) at West High (3-2)
Where: Trojan Field, 7:15 p.m.
Last Season: Did Not Play.
Player to Watch: Burlington junior running back Tykel Gordon (5-9, 170) has rushed for 428 yards and a touchdown while averaging 5.0 yards per carry.
Key Stat: Burlington allowed 413.5 rushing yards per game and 9.4 yards per carry in back-to-back losses to Newton and Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
About Burlington: The Grayhounds surpassed their win total from a year ago with back-to-back wins over Davenport North and Davenport West in weeks two and three. Since those two wins Burlington has dropped consecutive games by a combined score of 112-34 after a 77-13 loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy last Friday.
After throwing 10 interceptions and no touchdown last season Burlington already has 12 touchdown passes this year but played last week with starting quarterback L.T. Beck. Beck passed for 646 yards and 10 touchdowns with one interception in the first four games.
About West High: The Trojans are coming off back-to-back frustrating losses after falling to Cedar Rapids Prairie 39-20 in their district opener last week. West High outgained Prairie by more than 30 yards but had a pair of touchdowns negated by penalties in its second straight loss.
After producing a season-low 159 yards in a 20-7 loss to City High win week four the West High offense was back to producing last week. Led by 215 yards from Devontae Lane the Trojans rolled up 258 yards on the ground and finished with 393 total yards last week. West Branch will try to keep that going against a Burlington defense that is allowing 410 yards per game.
Class 1A No. 8 Wilton (5-0) at Class 1A No. 1 Regina (4-1)
Where: Regal Field, 7 p.m.
Last Season: Did Not Play.
Player to Watch: Wilton sophomore quarterback Jerome Mays (5-8, 145) has passed for 767 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception and rushed for 319 yards and seven scores.
Key Stat: Regina junior Isaac Vollstedt is averaging 10.2 yards per offensive touch this season.
About Wilton: With five straight wins to open the season Wilton has already matched its win total from a year ago. The Beavers have been impressive in district play outscoring three opponents 113-18. Wilton has been led by the trio of Jerome Mays, Bryce Oveson and Evan Reifert.
A senior running back, Oveson has rushed for a team-high 619 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Reifert has caught 15 passes for 265 yards and five touchdowns and has also been a key for the Beavers in the return game averaging 21.4 yards on eight punt returns.
About Regina: The Regals posted the second shutout of their four-game winning streak following a season-opening loss to Class 3A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Regina has allowed a total of 34 points in four games since allowing 35 points to the Saints in a week one loss. The Regals have allowed more than 133 yards just one time during their winning streak and are holding opponents to 229 yards per game this season.
Class 3A No. 5 West Delaware (5-0) at Class 3A No. 10 Clear Creek Amana (5-0)
Where: Clipper Field, 7:15 p.m.
Last Season: Did Not Play.
Player to Watch: Iowa State commit John Nagel (6-6, 235) has been a playmaker on both sides of the ball for West Delaware with eight tackles for loss and eight catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
Key Stat: Clear Creek Amana has nearly as many sacks (17) as points allowed (22).
About West Delaware: A state semifinalist a year ago the Hawks have picked up where they left off this season outscoring opponents 209-57 to run their regular season winning streak to 15 in a row. West Delaware has been one of the most explosive offenses in Class 3A averaging 497 total yards and 42 points per game.
Senior quarterback Tanner Wessels has passed for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns but the Hawks have done most of their damage on the ground. West Delaware is averaging 321 rushing yards per game led by sophomore Caleb Kehrli (5-11, 267) who has rushed for 721 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 8.7 yards per carry.
About Clear Creek Amana: The Clippers improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1999 with its second straight shutout and third of the season, a 26-0 win over Center Point-Urbana. Clear Creek Amana has allowed 22 points all season and is holding opponents to 159 total yards per game.
Offensively the Clippers are averaging better than 251 rushing yards per game and have run for better than 295 yards three times this season. Matt Brimeyer and Jared Eckrich combined for 240 yards and two touchdowns against Center Point-Urbana last week. The duo has rushed for a combined 566 yards and seven touchdowns since Drake Brezina was lost for the season with a torn ACL in week two.
Durant (1-4) at West Branch (3-2)
Where: The Little Rose Bowl, 7 p.m.
Last Season: West Branch 55, Durant 13.
Player to Watch: West Branch senior running back Luke Lenoch has rushed for 667 yards and 12 touchdowns in three district games.
Key Stat: West Branch senior Cooper Kabela has accounted for better than 50 percent of the Bears’ receiving yardage with 23 receptions for 385 yards and four touchdowns.
About Durant: After a 22-7 win over Columbus in the season opener Durant has been outscored 140-49 in four consecutive losses.
The Wildcats fell to 0-3 in District 3 play with a 21-6 loss to previously winless North Cedar last Friday. Durant is holding opponents to 303 yards and 29.4 points per game but has managed just 17 points in its last three games and is averaging 14.2 points per game.
About West Branch: The Bears had a two-game district winning streak snapped with
a 26-13 loss at Bellevue last week. West Branch joins Tipton at 2-1 in District 3 play while Bellevue and Clayton Ridge sit atop the district standings at 3-0.
Led by Lenoch the Bears have continued to pile up big offensive numbers this season. West Branch is averaging 409 total yards and 32 points per game this season. West Branch has given up more than 400 yards in each of its last two games. Prior to that two-game stretch West Branch had allowed 400 total yards in a game three times in its previous 26 games.
Class 3A No. 7 Solon (4-1) at Fort Madison (0-5)
Where: Fort Madison, 7:30 p.m.
Last Season: Did Not Play.
Player to Watch: Solon junior running back Kendrick Harris rushed for a career-high 182 yards last week and has scored a touchdown in three straight games.
Key Stat: Solon has forced 11 turnovers in three district wins and 13 on the season.
About Fort Madison: The Bloodhounds have been shut out in each of their first three district games after a 34-0 loss at Mount Pleasant last week. Yards have been tough to come by for Fort Madison this season. The Bloodhounds are averaging just 122 total yards per game this season and have managed just 28 points in five games.
Most of the offensive production for Fort Madison has come on the ground. The Bloodhounds have completed seven passes for 84 yards this season and are just 2-of-23 through the air for 18 yards in three district defeats. Junior running back Shance Redd-Donald (5-10, 174) leads Fort Madison with 190 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
About Solon: After giving up 415 yards and 27.5 points per game in its first two games of the season the Spartans are allowing just 208 yards and 6 points per game during their three-game district winning streak.
Solon revved up its offense last week, producing season-highs in total yards (432) and rushing yards (279) in a 34-3 win over Oskaloosa. Senior quarterback Blayze Griffis has been efficient during the Spartans three-game winning streak. Griffis has passed for 444 yards and six touchdowns while completing 77 percent of his passes in the last three games.
